Sochi Discovery World Aquarium is one of the premier attractions of Adler resort in Sochi. Built in late 2009, it is the largest aquarium in Russia. Specialists from Australia, New Zealand, China and other countries participated in its design and outfitting.
The Aquarium boasts a rich collection of underwater life. It houses some 4 000 freshwater and marine fishes as well as other aquatic animals from around the world which represent in excess of 200 species. They inhabit 30 aquariums with total water capacity of some 5 million liters.
There are several theme exhibits which reveal the secrets of our planet’s waters. The fresh water pavilion amazes visitors with a tropical forest waterfall which can be enjoyed from the pond's bridge. This exhibit contains about 100 different species from the Amazon, Ecuador, and up to Australia: piranhas, pacu (Colossoma bidens), trichogasters, symphysodons, cichlidae, aruanas and other fresh water fishes.
One of the exhibits contains Koi carps. Feeding times of the carps are always amazing. They love to eat live clams, shrimps, earthworms, tadpoles and frog eggs. Guests also have the unique opportunity to touch them.
And the last fresh water exhibit contains rare species including Chinese paddle-fish and sturgeon.
Downstairs is the exhibit which includes 13 small pools that contain a wide variety of marine fishes and a 44 m long see-through tunnel. Walking through the under water tunnel, visitors can enjoy coral reefs, the grotto with a sunken ship as well as jellyfish, sea horses, rays, giant catfishes, reef sharks, nurse sharks, dolphins, and other marine varieties of fish.
Exciting show programs await visitors daily - Shark Feeding and the Underwater World of Mermaids.
Scuba-diving lovers are welcome for a 30-minute session in a sea-water tank with total water capacity of some 3 000 tons.
